Consumers Want Increased Online Privacy Protections, According to an American Consumer Institute Survey

A national consumer survey conducted by the American Consumer Institute finds that the majority of consumers support stronger privacy protections.  Consumers expressed concerns about the collection and use of their personal information by tech companies like Google and Facebook, with 62% not trusting these companies with their information.  Of the 800 consumers surveyed, 33% said they had some trust, while only 2% completely trusted these companies with their information.

Asked if government should play a role in setting industry standards, such as a “code of conduct,” to reduce the potential abuse of online information, 61% of consumers agreed, while 29% disagreed.  The national telephone survey was completed on the week ending November 20th.
