Earlier this week in the U.S. Congress, the House Energy and Commerce Committee held an oversight hearing that addressed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and its controversial proposal to regulate satellite and cable TV set-top boxes. While the television industry has evolved drastically to provide new ways for consumers to access their favorite programing – including Netflix, Hulu, Google, Roku and others – the FCC’s efforts to regulate this dynamic market has led to a national bipartisan revolt.
Both Republican and Democratic members of Congress and overwhelming numbers of members from the Black and Hispanic Caucuses have expressed concern over the FCC’s set-top box proposal. Several advocacy groups, including the NAACP and LULAC, and even some of the FCC Commissioners have strongly criticized the proposal.
