Joining a coalition of health and public policy organizations, the American Consumer Institute signed a letter calling on Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Chiquita Brooks LaSure to finalize a proposal requiring that health plan issuers “place generic drugs on tiers labeled ‘generic’ and brand-name drugs on tiers labeled ‘brand-name.'”

Adopting this proposal is a simple step toward making generic drugs more accessible for patients. Doing so would disrupt the tiering system that currently often drives doctors and consumers toward higher-priced alternatives.
