ARLINGTON, VA — The American Consumer Institute (ACI) issued the following statement urging the Supreme Court to embrace the original purpose of Section 230, which was to protect and facilitate free speech on the internet. The Supreme Court prepares to hear oral arguments in the Gonzalez v. Google LLC  case today, February 21. At the heart of this case is whether Section 230 protections include algorithms that boost content.

Algorithm-based recommendations permeate the current internet ecosystem. Excluding this practice from protection under Section 230 would pose serious implications for the internet as we know it. It would reduce the volume of online content, which would go against Section 230’s original purpose, thereby stifling the free-flow of ideas. The Court should rule in favor of Americans’ free speech and uphold Section 230.
