American Consumer Institute Urges Governor DeSantis to Prioritize Consumer Interests

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – The American Consumer Institute Center (ACI) for Citizen Research, a leading nonprofit educational and research institute dedicated to protecting consumer interests, urges Governor Ron DeSantis to veto House Bill 1 (HB1) to safeguard consumer access to goods and services.

Key Points:

  • Impact of Social Media: Despite assumptions about the negative effects of social media on youth, available evidence lacks consensus on its impact. Further research is needed before enacting legislation based on assumed harms.
  • Parental Roles: HB1 overlooks the diversity among children and fails to consider individual needs and maturity levels. The American Psychological Association emphasizes the importance of tailoring decisions about social media use to each child, a task best left to parents.
  • Existing Tools: Parents already have access to tools for monitoring and controlling their child’s online activities. Many browsers, operating systems, and applications offer features to filter content and manage social media use.
  • Likely Effectiveness of HB1: HB1’s geographical restrictions can be easily circumvented using VPNs, undermining its effectiveness. Similar legislation in other states has led to increased use of VPNs, reducing the impact of such restrictions.

“As an organization dedicated to protecting consumer interests, ACI urges Governor DeSantis to veto House Bill 1. This legislation relies on faulty assumptions, usurps parental authority, and creates unnecessary barriers to access, with limited impact on social media use.”

ACI remains committed to advocating for consumer welfare policies and encourages Governor DeSantis to prioritize consumer interests by vetoing HB1.
