Arlington, VA – President Donald Trump took a positive step to target the issue of price transparency in healthcare. His recent Executive Order (EO), “Making America Healthy Again by Empowering Patients with Clear, Accurate, and Actionable Healthcare Pricing Information” marks a critical step toward empowering consumer choice for Americans nationwide.

For years, patients have been unable to compare healthcare costs before receiving treatment due to a lack of transparency in pricing. This oversight allowed powerful industry players to maintain undue bargaining power, reduce accountability, and force patients, employers, and taxpayers to bear the burden of skyrocketing healthcare costs.

This EO comes 5 years after EO 13877, which was released during Trump’s first term. Despite a clear call to “put patients first by requiring hospitals and health plans to deliver meaningful price information to the American people” compliance has remained a consistent issue nationwide. In some cases, like New Jersey,  less than 10% of hospitals in the state were found to be fully compliant with federal regulations.

ACI has been a consistent advocate for stronger transparency measures as a key solution to America’s healthcare cost crisis. Not only will this initiative create opportunities for consumer choice, but also drive competition among providers—potentially lowering costs via market-based solutions.

This initiative is a positive for consumers, and we strongly encourage bipartisan support to maintain transparency reforms. We urge policymakers—at both federal and state levels—to take immediate action to ensure strict enforcement and end the era of non-compliance.
