ACI Hosts Capitol Hill Event Highlighting Need for an AI Moratorium

Arlington, VA— Amidst ongoing debates about how Congress should respond to rampant state-level proposals to regulate artificial intelligence (AI), the American Consumer Institute held an event on May 22nd to discuss the merits of an AI regulatory moratorium.

ACI president, Tirzah Duren, moderated a panel discussion featuring Rep. Jay Obernolte, Congressman representing California’s 23rd district, Logan Kolas, Director of Technology Policy at the American Consumer Institute, and Perry Metzger, Chairman of the Alliance for the Future.

In line with ACI’s recent research exposing the rapidly growing AI patchwork, the panel of experts shared insights on some of the most concerning examples of state AI activity and proposed solutions to mitigate patchwork concerns now and in the future. Panelists agreed that an AI moratorium on state AI activity is not a substitute for Congressional action, instead suggesting that Congress take a leadership role in commonsense AI regulation.
