Arlington, VA-The American Consumer Institute, along with the undersigned organizations, sent a joint letter to the Surface Transportation Board (STB) expressing strong support for the proposed merger of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern railroads.
The coalition argues that the merger will strengthen America’s supply chains, improve rail efficiency, and lower costs for consumers by linking two of the nation’s largest rail networks into a unified coast-to-coast system. The letter calls the merger “an investment in America’s future” that will create high-quality jobs, revive domestic manufacturing, and position the U.S. to compete globally.
The coalition also warned that failing to modernize America’s rail infrastructure could leave the nation behind as China and Canada expand their own transcontinental rail systems. “Approving this merger ensures that American goods are moved by American workers, ultimately strengthening our economy while protecting national interests,” the letter states.
