Arlington, VA-The American Consumer Institute (ACI) filed comments opposing the Department of Commerce’s proposal to apply tariffs or import quotas on personal protective equipment (PPE), medical consumables, and medical devices under Section 232.
ACI’s analysis shows that even a 10 percent tariff on imported medical equipment—worth nearly $147 billion annually—could cost hospitals and patients $15 billion. A 100 percent tariff could raise costs by $150 billion and provoke foreign retaliation against U.S. medical innovators.
Instead of tariffs, ACI recommends expanding strategic stockpiles and reducing regulatory barriers to make U.S. manufacturing more competitive.
