Arlington, VA-The American Consumer Institute (ACI) joined a coalition of free-market and consumer first organizations in urging Congress to advance the SECURE Data Act (H.R. 8413), legislation designed to establish a national data privacy and security framework. In a letter to House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders, the coalition emphasized that the growing patchwork of state privacy laws is creating costly compliance burdens for businesses and uncertainty for consumers. The coalition praised the SECURE Data Act for balancing strong consumer protections—including rights to access, correct, and delete personal data—with a streamlined federal standard that avoids excessive litigation and regulatory complexity. ACI and the coalition called on Congress to swiftly pass the legislation to provide Americans with consistent privacy protections while supporting innovation and economic growth.
