In an impassioned plea to the Veterans Affairs Committee Leaders, military community members are rallying for the swift congressional reauthorization of funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). This vital initiative is a lifeline for millions of U.S. veterans and military families, offering them crucial access to affordable internet services.
The ACP, a cornerstone of modern support for veterans and their families, has successfully enrolled over 23 million American households, nearly half of which are military families. This program significantly reduces the cost of broadband, making it accessible, and in some cases free, for qualifying low-income veterans and their families. With subsidies reaching up to $30 per month, and up to $75 on tribal lands, the ACP has transformed the landscape of digital accessibility for the military community.
The importance of reliable internet connectivity cannot be overstated, particularly for veterans who rely on it for accessing healthcare, employment opportunities, job training, and VA benefits. Internet-supported telemedicine solutions, a critical resource for over 2.2 million veterans, underscore the necessity of maintaining this program.
However, the future of the ACP hangs in the balance, with current funding projected to expire in April. Without immediate action from Congress, this impending termination will disconnect millions of American households, leaving veterans and military families without essential online access.
The military community’s message is clear: Veterans fulfilled their duty to protect and serve our nation. It is now time for our country to uphold its commitment to them. The call to action urges Congress to prioritize extending the ACP’s funding and solidifying its status as a permanent support program, ensuring that veterans continue to receive the affordable broadband access they need.
As the deadline approaches, the military community awaits a positive response from Congress, hopeful for a decision that will continue to empower veterans and their families through the ACP.
