Arlington, VA-The American Consumer Institute (ACI) submitted comments to the Federal Trade Commission regarding its proposed rulemaking on fees in online food delivery services. In its filing, ACI emphasized that transparency rules should focus on preventing genuinely deceptive practices—such as hidden or late-disclosed fees—while preserving clear, itemized pricing that helps consumers understand what they are paying for.
ACI warned that overly broad “all-in” pricing mandates could reduce transparency by obscuring individual cost components and limiting consumers’ ability to compare prices and services effectively. The organization also noted that many delivery-related fees reflect legitimate operational costs tied to logistics, technology, customer support, and order fulfillment in the online delivery marketplace.
ACI urged the FTC to adopt a targeted, evidence-based approach that requires clear disclosure of mandatory fees without discouraging flexible pricing models that support consumer access and innovation in food delivery services.
