Coalition Letter: ACI Co-Leads Coalition Opposing RSA Mandates in Surface Transportation Package

Arlington, VA-The American Consumer Institute (ACI) co-led along side National Taxpayers Union a broad coalition of taxpayer, consumer, and limited-government organizations in urging Congress to reject inclusion of the Railway Safety Act (RSA) in the upcoming surface transportation reauthorization package. The coalition warned that the legislation would impose costly federal mandates on the freight rail industry, increase transportation costs for businesses and consumers, and discourage private-sector investment and innovation in critical infrastructure. The letter also raised concerns about the RSA’s proposed two-person crew mandate, arguing that federal reviews have found no causal connection between crew size and accident rates. The coalition emphasized that freight rail remains one of the nation’s safest and most efficient transportation sectors and urged lawmakers to pursue cost-effective, evidence-based policies instead of burdensome federal intervention.
