Arlington, VA-The American Consumer Institute (ACI) submitted public comments to the Utah Office of AI Policy urging regulators to adopt an evidence-based framework for medical artificial intelligence that protects patients without limiting access to innovative healthcare technologies. ACI recommends allowing validated AI systems to operate autonomously in clearly defined, lower-risk clinical settings where real-world evidence demonstrates they perform as well as or better than existing standards of care, while maintaining physician oversight for higher-risk applications. The comments emphasize that performance—not blanket human review requirements—should determine how medical AI is regulated, particularly as AI has the potential to expand access to quality healthcare in underserved and rural communities.
