Statement: Senate Votes to Overturn California Waiver

Arlington, VA — Today, the Senate followed in House’s lead by voting to overturn California’s waiver that would ban the sale of gas-powered cars.

Through the Clean Air Act, California can apply for and receive waivers to implement tighter environmental regulations than the rest of the nation. If granted, other states can follow suit. This waiver already had some or all its provisions adopted by nearly 20 states; its catastrophic effects would have been felt nationwide, negatively impacting car manufacturing, consumer welfare, and the economy.

Energy policy analyst Kristen Walker states:

“This is a huge win for consumers, who would have faced higher vehicle prices and fewer options under this draconian measure. Now car companies can produce cars that Americans want and can afford. The market should be dictating supply and demand, not individual lawmakers with personal agendas.”
