Report: How American Labor Unions Hurt Everyone

Arlington, VA—A new report from the American Consumer Institute (ACI), Neither Pro-Worker Nor Pro-Consumer: How American Labor Unions Hurt Everyone, finds that modern labor unions often harm both workers and consumers by driving up prices, reducing product quality, and stifling innovation.

Authored by ACI’s Director of Technology Policy, Logan Kolas, the report shows that union bargaining and lobbying act as a “union tax” on businesses—costs that are passed on to consumers through higher prices and fewer choices. Meanwhile, workers face fewer opportunities as union-driven policies limit investment and economic growth.

The report urges policymakers to expand right-to-work laws and reject federal efforts like the PRO Act, which would weaken state labor reforms and further entrench union monopolies.
