Arlington, VA-The American Consumer Institute (ACI) welcomes elements of President Trump’s healthcare plan that emphasize competition, consumer choice, and price transparency—principles ACI has consistently advanced in its research and commentary on healthcare reform.
ACI has long argued that healthcare works best when markets are allowed to function. Expanding direct-to-consumer drug sales, including over-the-counter medicine, increasing transparency around pharmacy benefit managers, and giving patients clear price information reduce the influence of costly middlemen and help drive down prices.
At the same time, ACI cautions against reforms that rely on expanded or redirected subsidies. Subsidies distort price signals, entrench inefficiencies, and often fail to benefit patients directly—a concern reflected in ACI’s analysis of federal drug discount programs.
Healthcare reform should prioritize competition, transparency, and accountability—not more bureaucracy. The American Consumer Institute looks forward to continuing to provide research and analysis that advance patient-centered, market-based solutions.
